Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt scored one of the most ridiculous goals ever seen in Premier League history on Saturday, much to the annoyance of Sunderland manager Steve Bruce who branded the goal ‘a joke’.
The Black Cats stood like statues as Spanish striker Fernando Torres took full advantage of a free-kick mix-up between defender Michael Turner and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, before teeing up his Dutch strike partner who fired into an empty net.
If you thought that goal was strange, take a look at this collection of own goals, blunders and bizarre incidents in the top ten list below.
10. Adam Czerkas v Wisla Plock
I doubt former QPR loanee Adam Czerkas ever scored a goal quite like this during his brief spell at Loftus Road. The Polish striker was rewarded for chasing a lost cause with this incredibly lucky swerving ricochet, watch it below-
9. John Eustace (own goal)
The Championship match between Watford and Reading in September 2008, will forever be remembered for the infamous ‘ghost goal’. Referee Stuart Attwell ruled that unlucky midfielder John Eustace had cleared the ball into his own net, despite the fact his clearance had sailed at least three yards wide of the post. The match finished 2-2.
8. Darren Bent V Liverpool
Liverpool were so bad last season that even a giant red beach ball, a reported transfer target for Man City, managed to score against them. Watch Darren Bent’s assisted effort below.
7. Dion Dublin v Newcastle
Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given naively rolled the ball in front of him following a routine catch, unaware Coventry City striker Dion Dublin was lurking off the pitch behind him.
Dublin simply ran back onto the pitch before knocking it into an empty net. Much to the annoyance of Irishman Given.

6. Paul Robinson v Watford
Paul Robinson was mobbed by his team-mates after his powerful free-kick from 80 yards freakishly bounced over the head of former England rival Ben Foster to put his side 2-0 up. Enjoy it below-

5. Khalid Askri v Maghreb Fev
Referred to on YouTube as ‘the most stupid goalkeeper ever’, Khalid Askri became an overnight internet sensation for all the wrong reasons following this penalty shoot-out.
After initially saving a penalty, Askri celebrated his save to this side of the goal. However with his back turned, the wickedly spinning ball rolled into the net and the goal was given. Watch the ridiculous incident below-

4. Peter Enckleman v Birmingham City
Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckleman watched in horror as he allowed a tame throw-in from his own team-mate brush underneath his foot and roll into the net. The fact it happened in a hotly contested derby against Birmingham City made it a lot worse for the hapless goalkeeper.

3. Martin Palermo v Valez Sarsfield
Argentine striker Martin Palermo must have set some sort of record when he scored this sublime header from 40-yards with impressive technique-

2. Vanderlei v Cruzeiro
Cruzeiro goalkeeper Fabio did not notice that his team-mates had restarted the game after conceding a third goal against opponents Atletico Mineiro. The Brazilian side soon lost possession and Mineiro were on the attack again.
Fabio however was still rummaging through his net for the football which had been knocked past him moments earlier, leaving striker Vanderlei to fire past the unsuspecting goalie.
1. Mike Hanke v Bayer Leverkusen
Penalty taking German goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt was as pleased as punch when he scored from the spot in an away game against Schalke in 2004. However lost in the joyous celebrations, Butt failed to notice the opposition’s quick kick-off and striker Mike Hanke’s outrageous lob from the half-way line, as he ran back to goal. Even team-mate Lucio couldn’t help but see the funny side.
