As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers does not feel secure in his job despite a wonderful 12 months in charge of the Scottish champions.
What’s the story?
Rodgers knows better than most people in football that managers can go from hero to villain in the blink of an eye. Once a hero at Liverpool after taking them so close to the English Premier League title, it all went pear-shaped for him at Anfield, perhaps unfairly.
That experience appears to have driven him on though in a search for consistency and he’s taking nothing for granted at the Hoops despite a monumental season last term.
The club destroyed the competition in Scotland, winning a domestic treble and going unbeaten to boot. The manager knows that the perception of him can change instantly though.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Rodgers said:
I am not secure in my job. After an experience has gone I am looking over my shoulder. I can never rest. Am I secure? No chance. Not in the modern game. Even here. This is new football, it’s totally different. I’ve seen it, look at Claudio Ranieri, it’s modern football. As a manager you either walk on water – or you’re the devil. That could be within the space of two days.
While Celtic fans will probably the quickest to reassure him the job at the Hoops is his for as long as he wants, they will be buoyed that Rodgers is obviously eager to improve on what the club did last season.
The biggest danger to the Hoops over the coming season is complacency but you get the impression that the Celtic boss is eager, more than anyone, to ensure that doesn’t creep in.
