West Ham should forget making a move for £75m-rated Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson if Marko Arnautovic leaves for China, and should instead focus their attentions on reuniting Roma forward Edin Dzeko with boss Manuel Pellegrini.
What’s the word, then?
The Hammers recently rebuffed a £35m offer from Shanghai SIPG for their Austrian talisman, who they value at closer to £50m but do not want to sell regardless of any offer, according to Sky Sports.
Arnautovic has scored seven Premier League goals this season, and is the leading man at the London Stadium – at 29 years of age, the Irons could probably replace him, but it is the embarrassment of suffering another situation such as the Dimitri Payet fiasco.
The east Londoners have identified the Cherries’ talisman of their own in Wilson, who has scored nine goals and recorded five assists this season as well as making his England debut, on which he managed to find the net. However, the 26-year-old is very injury prone, so would be an expensive risk unlike Dzeko.
What can Dzeko bring to the Hammers?
The Bosnian international has scored seven goals in all competitions this season, including five strikes in the Champions League in just four games. However, he has started just 11 Serie A games with Patrik Schick seriously challenging him for his position up top.
32-year-old Dzeko knows the Premier League well having made 130 appearances in England for Manchester City, in which time he netted 50 league goals for the Citizens on his way to two Premier League titles.
He is still an extremely effective frontman who would be an ideal January capture to replace Arnautovic, as he already knows the league and the manager in Pellegrini – he shouldn’t need any time at all to settle in and make an impact, whilst he would be infinitely cheaper than Wilson should the Hammers secure a loan deal.
